Vendor and EPOS networks

Vendor WiFi and card payment networks that stay up.

Every trader on their own isolated network, with card terminals and EPOS on a prioritised lane. Nobody queues behind someone else’s phone to take a payment.

Why it matters

A trader who cannot take cards remembers it for years.

Of everything that can go wrong with connectivity at an event, payments failing is the one that costs real money and does lasting damage to your relationship with the people who pay to trade with you. It is also the most avoidable.

The usual cause is simple: everyone is on one network. A few hundred people streaming video on the public WiFi, and the card terminal in the burger van is competing with all of them for the same airtime.

Separating them is not exotic engineering. It is just something a lot of temporary networks do not bother to do.

Traders on their own lane

How we set it up

  • A VLAN per vendor. Each trader sits on their own subnet with their own passphrase. They cannot see each other, and neither can the public network.
  • A prioritised lane for payments. Card terminals, EPOS tills and ticket scanners get QoS priority, so a payment goes through while someone nearby is downloading a film.
  • Client isolation on the public side, so attendee devices cannot reach each other or anything on the trading networks.
  • Fair queuing and per-client rate limiting, which stops any single device degrading the rest.
  • Per-network usage logs handed to you after the event, so you can see what each network actually did.
  • Ticket scanning at the gate on the staff network, kept away from public traffic entirely.

Proven on site

At Fortified we ran three separate VLANs inside a fort with no mobile signal: public, vendor and staff, each on its own subnet with client isolation on the public network. Over three days that carried 132 GB with no outages, and the public network accounted for between 54 and 85 per cent of traffic per access point, which is exactly why the traders were not sharing it.

What your traders need to know

Not much, which is the idea. They get a network name and a password on arrival, they connect the terminal, it works. Where a trader brings their own 4G terminal and it happens to work on your site, fine, nothing we do interferes with that. Where it does not work, and on a no-signal site it usually does not, they are covered.
