Cellular internet

Cellular internet for events, as the main connection.

High-gain 4G and 5G, run properly rather than as a phone hotspot in a biscuit tin. Often the sensible answer when a satellite dish is either overkill or simply cannot see the sky.

When it is the right answer

Not every site needs a dish, and not every site can take one.

We usually lead with satellite, because most of the sites we work have no usable mobile coverage. But satellite is not automatically the right call, and selling it to an event that does not need it is just an expensive habit.

Where there is cellular signal worth having, 4G or 5G done properly will carry an event perfectly well, for less money and with less to rig.

Primary, not backup

The two reasons we go cellular

  • Budget. A satellite deployment costs what it costs. For a one-day show, a village fete or a small market, it is often more than the connectivity is worth to the event. Cellular brings the number down to something sensible.
  • No sky. Satellite needs a clear line to the horizon. Dense canopy directly overhead, a deep valley, a site hemmed in by buildings, or a marquee you cannot run cable out of will all defeat a dish. Cellular does not care what is above you, only what is around you.

Done properly, not a hotspot on a table

The difference between cellular that works at an event and cellular that embarrasses everyone is mostly antennas and placement, not the router.

  • High-gain external antennas, mounted at height and aimed, rather than whatever is moulded into the side of a router sat on a trestle table.
  • Carrier selection at survey. Coverage varies enormously between networks on the same field. We check rather than assume, because the one with the best map is frequently not the one with the best signal where you are standing.
  • The same network behind it as any other job. Separate VLANs for public, staff and vendors, fair-use limits, and the coverage planned properly across the site.
  • Multi-SIM where it is worth it. More than one carrier bonded, so a single network having a bad afternoon does not become your problem.

Honest limits

Cellular is shared infrastructure, and you are sharing it with everyone else in range. On a normal day that is fine. Put ten thousand people in a field and the local mast becomes the bottleneck, however good your antennas are, which is precisely why big events go satellite.

So we will not recommend it for a large crowd, and we will tell you at survey if your site has less signal than you think. The honest version of this service is that it is excellent for a lot of events and wrong for some, and we would rather sort that out before you book than after.

Or both together

Where an event genuinely cannot afford to drop, cellular and satellite run alongside each other with automatic cutover. One path failing does not take the bar offline, and nobody on site notices it happened. That is the belt-and-braces option and it is priced accordingly.
